Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to the Aspley Sunset Motel on that corner where Gympie Road meets Darwin Street, I wasn’t expecting much. It’s one of those classic Australian motor inns that looks pretty standard from the outside, but you know what? Sometimes those places surprise you, and this one definitely did.

The thing about staying here is that you’re actually in a really practical spot without paying those crazy Brisbane CBD prices. Aspley isn’t flashy, but it’s got that genuine suburban Brisbane feel – you’re close enough to zip into the city (about 20 minutes if you time it right), but you’re also near some decent local spots that most tourists never see. The staff at check-in were surprisingly switched on too, which I mean… that’s not always a given at places like this. They knew the area well enough to point me toward a proper coffee shop down the road instead of just shrugging and saying “there’s a servo.”

What really won me over was the attention to detail that you don’t expect from a 3.5-star place. The rooms are clean – like, actually clean, not just “motel clean” – and they’ve clearly put some thought into the little things. The beds are comfortable enough that I didn’t wake up feeling like I’d been wrestling with a brick, and the air conditioning actually works without sounding like a freight train. Plus, parking is right there outside your door, which honestly is worth its weight in gold when you’re dealing with Brisbane traffic and trying to figure out where to leave your car. The area gets pretty quiet at night too, even though you’re on a main road – I was worried about traffic noise, but the rooms are set back just enough that it’s not an issue.

I stayed during one of those typical Brisbane autumn weeks where the weather can’t make up its mind, and having a comfortable base that didn’t break the bank made all the difference. The whole place has this unpretentious vibe that I actually found refreshing after dealing with some of the more “boutique” places that charge twice as much for half the substance. It’s the kind of spot where you can just settle in without feeling like you need to be on your best behavior all the time. And honestly, with a rating of 8.9, I can see why people keep coming back – it’s one of those places that does the basics really well instead of trying to be something it’s not.
