So I stayed at this place called 61F Skyline Retreat – honestly, the name’s a bit of a mouthful, but once you see the views from the higher floors, you get it. It’s tucked away on South East Busway, which actually works in your favor because you’re right there when you need to hop on public transport, but far enough from Queen Street that you’re not dealing with all that weekend chaos.

The thing that caught me off guard was how quiet it gets at night, considering you’re still technically in the city. I mean, you’ll hear the occasional bus rolling by, but it’s nothing compared to staying closer to the Valley. What really sold me though was waking up to that view – you can actually see the Brisbane River winding its way through the city, and if you crane your neck a bit (or get lucky with a corner room), you’ll catch glimpses of the Botanic Gardens. There’s something pretty satisfying about having your morning coffee while watching the CityCats puttering along below. The rooms themselves are… well, they’re clean and functional. Nothing fancy, but honestly, when you’re paying what you’re paying and getting those views, you’re not exactly expecting marble bathrooms. The air conditioning works well – important during those brutal Brisbane summers – and the beds are actually decent. I was worried about street noise, but the windows do a good job blocking most of it.

Check-in was smooth enough, though I’d recommend calling ahead if you’re arriving late because the front desk isn’t 24/7. Parking’s available but it’ll cost you extra, which is pretty standard for this area. If you’re comfortable walking about ten minutes, there’s cheaper street parking near the cultural precinct, just watch the signs because they’re strict about time limits during the week. You know what I appreciated most? The staff actually knew the area – when I asked about getting to South Bank without dealing with traffic, the guy at the desk gave me this whole spiel about the river walk route that I never would’ve figured out on my own. It’s not a luxury hotel by any stretch, but for a three-star place, it punches above its weight. The location really is the star here – you’re close enough to walk to the Treasury Casino if that’s your thing, and the Gallery of Modern Art is just across the river. Plus, and this might sound weird, but the elevators are actually fast, which matters when you’re on a higher floor and running late for dinner reservations.
